Vicenta Verónica Hernández Batz

Totonicapán, 5 November 2004.

Valuable friend,

My name is Vicenta Verónica Hernández Batz,
I am 26 years old.

I work at my parents’ small bakery. Right now I am studying the first year of high school (Básico) and it is a very difficult situation, so the money that I earn scarcely is enough to pay my monthly costs. I could not study when I was a girl because my parents were alcoholics and we were 5 children.

Now I am interested in studying, since I see that it is very important to be able to earn my own wages and live better. I do not think I will marry--for the present I want to be a nurse. Because of that I need to complete the secondary school and I am 2 years away from finishing, 2005 - 2006. Please help me.

I promise to study very much and write to you and to tell you how it goes. I know that Associacion Victoria helps people who need to study.

I am a Maya K'iche' and live 197 kilometers from the capital. My city it is Totonicapán and is one of the poorest in the country. And we are second place in malnutrition. The city is surrounded with many mountains, because of that there are many handicrafts.

Another day I am going to tell you more.

Thank you, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2005.

Vicenta Verónica Hernández Batz
