The photo below is from a June 2006 meeting with the Project Victoria families to distribute scholarship funds. Pictured are Paulina Quisquina, Oralia Chopen, and Oralia's son Wilson. Hurricane Stan hit Guatemala in early October 2005 and had a devastating effect. None of the Project Victoria students or volunteers were seriously hurt, but families of several of the students lost their homes in the storm. During this crisis, Project Victoria student Isabel Guarchaj assumed a leadership role in coordinating relief efforts in Nahualá. On May 29, 2005, Project Victoria Coordinator Marielos Hernández received news that she had been awarded a Native Leadership scholarship through the Channel Foundation. The award will pay for her graduate education in the field of mental health and counseling while she continues to lead Project Victoria.
On Friday, February 25, 2005, an article appeared in the Cedar Rapids Gazette describing Christopher Curran's visits to Spanish classes at local high schools to speak about political history and current events in Guatemala. The article also publicized a benefit salsa dance at CSPS art gallery in Czech Village that was held that night and drew many Cedar Rapids high school students.
